NAD+: what do studies measure?

The biological role of NAD+, NR studies, and the difference between a laboratory marker and an outcome you can experience.

What is NAD+?

NAD+ is a coenzyme involved in cellular metabolism. NR, or nicotinamide riboside, is a precursor the body can use to make NAD+. Knowing the role of a molecule does not by itself tell us what taking a supplement will achieve. [1]

What does an NR study show?

Conze and colleagues compared different NR doses in an eight-week randomised, placebo-controlled study. Blood NAD+ increased. The trial did not establish longer life and did not test HologenX finished products. Participants, the tested ingredient and dose are important to interpreting the result. [1]

Three questions behind an impressive number

What was sampled: blood or another tissue? What was the change compared with? Were wellbeing, function or longer-term health outcomes measured as well as the biomarker? Blood NAD+ is not a percentage gauge of whole-body energy.

How can this help when comparing products?

Compare the composition per daily serving, not just capsule counts. Check whether a cited study used the same ingredient and dose. A product label and a research protocol serve different purposes; a study dose is not personal dosing advice.
