Biological age: what does the score mean?
Understanding an estimate requires knowing its method and uncertainty.
Chronological age and an estimate
Chronological age is determined by your date of birth. Biological-age tests instead estimate a value from different kinds of data. Methods may use laboratory results, DNA methylation patterns or other signals. The meaning of the number depends on the model. [1]
Why might two tests disagree?
Models can be developed for different targets, populations and measurements. Results from two different tests are therefore not necessarily comparable. Sampling and measurement uncertainty also matter. One value does not describe the condition of every organ. [1]
What does an improved score prove?
A lower score alone does not prove rejuvenation or a longer life. First ask how reproducible the measurement is and whether a change relates to outcomes that matter in daily life. A change measured after starting a supplement does not establish causation without an appropriate comparison. [1]
What should you ask about a test?
What exactly does it estimate? In whom was it validated? How much do repeated results vary? What would the result change about your decisions? These questions help put a score in context.
